The best thing about spring and summer is how scenic everything becomes as it blooms, as well as how much easier it is to drive by it all without all that snow in the way. One incredible place to take a long drive is Highway 1 in California. This 121-mile drive along the Pacific coastline passes by the ocean and so many historic cities where you can stop and see the sights or grab a bite to eat.
For a shorter trip, try Illinois’ Lake Shore Drive, which takes you along Lake Michigan and through Chicago’s parks for 18 miles. The Brockway Mountain Drive is even shorter at 9 miles, heading up Brockway Mountain in Michigan. Virginia has the Skyline Drive, another trip of 105 miles through Shenandoah National Park, where 1,300 species of plants live. Don’t miss it in May when the wildflowers bloom.
